Soft Tissue Grafting
The health and appearance of your gums are just as important as your teeth. When the gum tissue recedes or becomes thin, it can expose the tooth roots, cause sensitivity, and increase the risk of decay or bone loss.
As a periodontist, our doctor specializes in restoring and rebuilding healthy gum tissue through advanced soft tissue grafting procedures. These treatments not only protect your teeth but also enhance the natural beauty and balance of your smile.
Why Soft Tissue Grafting May Be Needed
Gum recession can result from periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, genetics, or even orthodontic movement. As the gum line recedes, tooth roots become exposed—leading to sensitivity, higher risk of root cavities, and aesthetic concerns.
Soft tissue grafting restores the lost or thinned gum tissue, reestablishing a protective barrier and improving both function and appearance.
Types of Soft Tissue Grafting
Connective Tissue Graft
A connective tissue graft is the most common form of gum grafting and is ideal for covering exposed roots. During this procedure, a thin layer of connective tissue is taken from beneath the surface of the patient’s own palate and placed over the area of recession.
This graft blends seamlessly with the surrounding gum tissue, thickening and reinforcing the area for long-term stability and protection. Performed by a periodontist, this delicate microsurgical technique yields highly predictable and aesthetic results.
Free Gingival Graft
A free gingival graft is often recommended for patients with very thin or fragile gums who need to strengthen and increase the band of attached tissue around the teeth. In this procedure, a small piece of tissue is taken directly from the palate and attached to the recipient site. While it does not always cover exposed roots, it significantly improves the resilience of the gum tissue, making it more resistant to future recession and inflammation. This approach is especially beneficial in lower front teeth or areas prone to irritation from brushing or movement.
Pedicle (Lateral) Graft
A pedicle graft, also called a lateral sliding flap graft, utilizes the patient’s own neighboring gum tissue to cover an area of recession. The tissue is partially lifted and repositioned over the exposed root while keeping its original blood supply intact, which promotes faster and more reliable healing. This technique is ideal when there is sufficient healthy tissue adjacent to the affected tooth and is often associated with excellent color and contour blending.
Allograft and Advanced Techniques
For patients who prefer not to use tissue from their own palate—or when multiple teeth require grafting —allograft materials (donor tissue or collagen matrices) can be used. These modern grafting options are safe, biocompatible, and eliminate the need for a secondary surgical site, providing both comfort and convenience. With the precision and training of a periodontist, these materials integrate naturally and achieve predictable, long-term success.
